Overloaded Trucks in Bulgaria: A Growing Risk and How Goodloading Can Help

In just two days following the implementation of Bulgaria’s new dynamic weighing system, authorities detected a staggering 537 overloaded trucks on national roads. The most extreme case involved a vehicle carrying 67 tons—27 tons over the legal limit. This alarming statistic, reported by bTV and covered by Dir.bg, underscores the urgent need for better load planning and axle weight distribution in the transport sector.
The new system, known as Weigh In Motion (WIM), uses embedded road sensors to automatically measure vehicle weight in real time without stopping traffic. It aims to reduce accidents caused by overloaded trucks and prevent accelerated road wear. Violators face a compensatory fee of 1,200 BGN or a fine of up to 3,000 BGN for first-time offenses, with even higher penalties for repeat violations.
